When Talk Therapy Isn’t Enough,

EMDR Can Help

Evidence-based trauma treatment to help you heal from the past and feel more like yourself again.

When the Past Doesn’t Stay in the Past.

You may feel like you’ve moved on, but your body tells a different story. Maybe you’re constantly on edge, shut down emotionally, or flooded with memories, sensations, or self-doubt that seem to come out of nowhere.

Whether it was one overwhelming event or years of smaller wounds that never had space to heal, trauma can shape how you think, feel, and relate to the world.

At Growth Psychotherapy, we offer EMDR therapy in Ontario - a proven, structured approach that helps you reprocess trauma safely, so the past no longer feels like it's running your life.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma therapy approach that helps your brain reprocess distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge. It does this by combining guided recall of a difficult memory with bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sound).

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe your trauma in detail. Instead, it supports your nervous system in resolving the distress on a neurological level, so you can move forward with less reactivity, more clarity, and deeper inner peace.

What EMDR Therapy Can Help With.

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), American Psychological Association (APA), and Veterans Affairs Canada. It's shown to be effective for variety of mental health concerns including:

  • PTSD and complex trauma (C-PTSD)

  • Childhood emotional, physical, or sexual abuse

  • Single-incident trauma (e.g., accidents, assaults, loss)

  • Medical trauma or traumatic childbirth

  • Anxiety, phobias, or panic attacks

  • Negative self-beliefs or internalized shame

  • Burnout and vicarious trauma (especially for caregivers or first responders)

  • Ongoing effects of systemic or intergenerational trauma

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

Your EMDR sessions will be:

  • Structured and personalized — We follow an 8-phase protocol that includes resourcing, reprocessing, and integration.

  • Trauma-informed and paced for safety — We won't begin reprocessing until you're ready. We'll help you build emotional regulation tools first.

  • Collaborative and non-judgmental — You remain in control. We won't ask you to relive or describe trauma in detail unless you choose to.

  • Empowering and insight-building — EMDR helps you shift stuck beliefs like “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault” into adaptive truths like “I did the best I could” or “I am not defined by what happened to me.”
